Welcome Kent, great to see you on the list.

Yep, the great thing about the SQL Express product is they keep using
the word "free" as in free to obtain and free to deploy. I would expect
the other Express products to cost something to obtain and while you
certainly can't do anything commercial or redistribute apps with the VB
or C# Express beta products, it wouldn't surprise me if you were able to
do so with the RTM version that "costs". I've heard strong opinions both
ways on that. We'll have to wait and see.

    Regards,

    Greg

Well, no, its not quite that easy. While its true that you can deploy
the database files via "xcopy," the engine itself must first be
installed. Sadly, that's not just a DLL, but is the client and the .NET
runtime too. The meat and bones get covered here:
    http://msdn.microsoft.com/library/en-us/dnsse/html/sseoverview.asp?frame
    =true#sseover_topic12
    (watch for wrap).

Now, on Licensing: the official stance is "SQL Server Express is free to
use and redistribute. Please note that pre-release preview and beta
software is for testing and evaluation purposes only, and should not be
    deployed for any other uses."
    [http://lab.msdn.microsoft.com/express/faq#sqlexpress] Tom Rizzo
recently added this: "Express Edition also gives partners the ability to
embed a database into their applications at no cost to the partner.
The Express Edition is free and completely redistributable."

Infer from that what you like. Of course, I'm going to encourage to talk
to local MS licensing rep too, largely to see the eye light when they
get to tell the same thing. :)

    Cheers,

<delurk>PS: And yes, I'm a Yank -- greetings from "Upover"... although
the parts of it I'm in are more like our version of the "never-never..."
When I saw Greg mention this list, I just had to subscribe... I was
hoping to just lurk and watch the action, but since that's a question I
get a lot, I thought 'avago at it.</delurk>
