| Installing X11 on MacOS X |
Dear Lazyweb, I can see conflicting descriptions of how to install X11 on my wife's Macintosh. Some say I have to download something, while others say that I need to install X11 as part of the system setup. Given her machine is MacOS 10.4.11, how do I get X11 installed?

You can do it from either a download or from packages available on the Tiger install CD.

It's available as a OS X pkg on one of the CDs (either the main install CDs or maybe the devtools one); alternately, you can install it from http://www.apple.com/downloads.

I'd recommend the CD. Prior to 10.3 (I think), there was no official Apple version, and a bunch of different download-able ones (I seem to remember using Oroborosx), but now days I believe most people use the one from the Mac OS X install disk.
Note that you may have to scroll down to find the installer on the disk, and it might be called install extra stuff or something like that rather than referring to X11 specifically.

If you can't find your Tiger install CDs/DVD, the download is available from http://www.apple.com/support/downloads/x11formacosx.html

I'm confused too. It definitely used to be an optional download, but later versions included it on the install dvd. But when I went to reinstall it on my intel laptop after the hard drive was replaced I couldn't find it. In the end, I copied it from another machine that still had it installed.
So unhelpful, but look on the install disks. Once you have it installed, Software update should maintain it as you'd expect.

Ok, so I tried using the Apple download site at first and then gave up. Spirred on my your kind suggestions, I had another go. I found it in the end... On page 13 of the Apple downloads. Perhaps they could make stuff easier to find?

Apple still lets you download X11? Are you sure it's not an ancient version intended for a previous version of MacOS? The way I'd do it is to find the OSX install CDs and install X11.pkg from there, followed by running Software Update to catch the updates.
