DSE WebCam with Microphone

Bob Edwards picked up a Dick Smith web cam a little while ago. It was interesting because we've both been looking for OV511 based web cams for a while after I picked up a nice on on holidays in Perth -- I haven't been able to find a supplier since. This new camera is an interesting one for a couple of reasons:

    • It's OV519 based
    • It speaks JPEG natively (and therefore doesn't work with video4linux)
    • It's cheap (about $60 Australian)
    • The driver only works with Linu 2.4 kernels at the moment
So here I am on a Sunday evening, in my office at ANU fiddling away. I've had this camera on my TODO list for a little while, so I have some code already. The basic approach I am taking is to take the 2.4 driver which outputs JPEG files, and write a little user space daemon which decompresses these, and then reinserts the images into the video4linux system so that other applications can still use the camera.

I'm standing on the shoulders of giants here, because there is already a driver, there is sample code for the reinjection (from the dude who wrote Motion), and JPEG decompression still pretty well understood. So far I have a user space application which reads a frame from the camera and sticks it in a file on disc. I just have to solve the reinjection problem now...

The images aren't too amazing. Here's a sample:

It's pretty hard to focus at the moment because it's getting dark outside. This might not be the best image quality the camera is capable of...

Playing with vloopback, the following sites are of interest:

    To be continued...

Hi there, I just read heather's comments and am in the exact same situation. I also have a DSE webcam, a friend set it up and i have just bought a new computer and need to find the driver on-line somewhere. Are you able to help at all please?
    Thanks, Rebecca (rock4bec@hotmail.com)

Unfortunately I have only ever used these cameras on Linux, and discarded the Windows driver CD somewhere on a continent I now longer live on. You may find that a Google search turns up a driver, but be careful, as you may end up installing viruses or spyware that way.

The other way would be to give Dick Smith a call and ask for help.

    #4 sam

hi hows it going i brought this webcam off a friend of mine it is the dse xh5096 and it didnt come with a driver/installation cd if you can help me it would be greatly appreciated.

    #10 Rick Measham

How's the driver work going? I'd love to get this going on linux 2.6 .. even as far as just spitting out a JPEG on a timed basis (as that's all I really want to use V4L for with this cam)

If you're managed to get the 2.4 driver working on 2.6 and it spits out JPEGs, does it spit them out 15 per second?

    Cheers!

    Hi,

I'm trying to install this for my Dad's friend. I have installed the driver from www.dse.com, but don't have the application software to use it. A logitech software isn't picking it up. Dad's friend lost the installation disk. Any other way to get this software?

    Thanks,

    Brendan.

Look in the page, the mic-less cam is at the top of the list the mic+cam is next under.

click your cam type then "Agree" then download.

this site is for the linux version of this driver, and as such is not the place for such requests.

If anyone is (still) interested, I've just downloaded, installed and verified an XP driver for my DSE XH5096 webcam from the DSE site:

    http://www.dse.co.nz/cgi-bin/dse.storefront/46260cc400aff0442740c0a87f3306b7/UserTemplate/DownloadTC/download/XH5096_Driver.exe

The download dropped out several times - but I eventually got it and it looks ok to me. Let me know if the download doesn't work for you...

    #53 Josh

I down loaded the drivers but i dont know how to get them to work? its in a zipfile and I extracted it. I now have a bunch of files which I dont know wat to do with? I was hoping it would just be an .exe file that installed it. Where do i put the files i have?

    #54 Dan Brook

At the time of writing none of the above links were in working order but I managed to find the drivers again here:

Absolutely terrible how they have hidden that and haven't maintained the website in a good manner.

    #67 PeggyG

Hi been looking for drivers too for my webcam to work with vista while searching i came across a linux page witha download site for drivers for the DSE XH5096. As it was linux i didnt go anyfurther but did write down the river it suggested OV51X it's for linux and has heaps of other downloads on the site for linux camera etc. just didnt keep site url but i'm sure if I can find it you can more so if you use the driver that I gave you as a starting point. As for the Dick Smith site you have to register with them to be able to download the drivers and they only go up to XP for Windows. Once you register you should be able to download the software, they want a email address associated with your ISP (internet provider) in case your up to no good then they can track you down using the email address or at least they hope so. Thats why hotmail etc are no good and they will not accept them. Good luck hunting I'm going to try the Windows site to see if they can help.

    #68

Easy as pie to istall the driver for the XH5121.
    1. Download this from the dse site:
    http://www.dse.co.nz/cgi-bin/dse.storefront/46260cc400aff0442740c0a87f3306b7/UserTemplate/DownloadTC/download/XH5096_Driver.exe

    2. Plug in your cam and where it asks if you would like to install from a specific location click on that option.

    3. Where it asks you where you would like to search for the drivers, Locate the folder you just downloaded and click next it should find them and start installing.
