I just did one on Saturday. Gold status for star alliance was worth the $200 the flight cost me. Although it was pretty depressing. I'd think that everyone would be happier if I could have just paid the airline whatever their profit margin was on my trip...
Chris on Finding locking deadlocks in python at 2008-11-11 20:14:31
Locks themselves (as provided by threading) already are context-managed, so if you're using the locks as provided, then you get the necessary behaviour for free.
If you want to write your own context managers, you either can implement the __enter__ and __exit__ methods in a class that you want to context manage, or you can use the contextmanager decorator that is provided in contextlib (part of the Python > 2.5 standard lib).
contextmanager is great -- you just write a generator function that yields a single result, and the decorator implements the context manager protocol so that you can use it with 'with'.
Michael Still on Finding locking deadlocks in python at 2008-11-11 19:28:30
That does look cool. It looks to me like I'd still need to write a class which wraps the lock though?
Chris on Finding locking deadlocks in python at 2008-11-11 17:19:56
In case things like this ever happen again to you,
Locks in Python implement the context manager protocol: http://www.python.org/dev/peps/pep-0343/ -- so when you use locks, you can shove the code that requires a lock to be held inside a 'with' clause, and have the lock get automatically acquired on entry and released on exit (even with an exception)
Really really worth looking at.

I almost convinced myself not to comment, and I ought not, but...
You know this stuff.

Training wheels are Evil Incarnate and positively stop kids from learning to ride. They're a construct designed to make parents feel relaxed. Get rid of them ASAP. Both my kids learned with about an afternoon of parental input and no training wheels, Cadell before his 4th birthday and Madeleine a bit later. It takes physical effort to support them, but its awesome watching them get it.

I did a mileage run last year. I'm not going to try again this year... So close too. 2k miles.
conall on Adium crashes on launch at 2008-11-04 03:09:41
Have you tried turning it off and on again? :P
If that doesn't work, go get one of the Debug Adium builds from adiumx.com. I ran debug builds for a while when I was reporting bugs against Adium's libpurple.
Michael Still on Adium crashes on launch at 2008-11-03 20:49:20
So there's the thing. I tried running adium from the command line, but its not clear to me how you launch a Macintosh GUI app that way. The Adium entry in the Applications folder is actually a folder itself, with all kind of weird stuff in it. How do you run a Mac GUI program from the command line?
I moved the stuff in the library folder out of the way, and that didn't help either.
Oh, and the dock has lost the Adium icon as well, which doesn't seem like a good sign to me.
Matthew Sheppard on Adium crashes on launch at 2008-11-03 20:35:42
My first guess would be your preferences are corrupt somehow - Does the issue affect all users on the machine, or just one?. If it's just one user, try moving the Adium folder in /Users/username/Library/Application Support aside and launching again. If it works then, you know that was the problem. Depending on how attached you are to all your settings, you might try moving the bits in there back one at a time to narrow down to an individual file which is causing the issue.
Failing that, there's a little app called Console in your /Application/Utilities folder - Fire it up, clear the display, then launch Adium and see if you get any useful info there.

Michael Still on Books read in October 2008 at 2008-11-03 07:27:38
Well, I went through a long phase where I only read while on aeroplanes. Then dad bought me a book I liked as a kid, and it set of this big reading kick. So for me I guess the motivation is that I really enjoy the books I am reading, and want to get to the end of them. Try reading something you'll love perhaps?

Don't make me feel bad. My list of books read in October 2008:
That's right. None. How do you motivate yourself to read more?

You just cant win with them. Heres my story of months that it took me to get Comcast to cancel my service: http://consumer-complaint.blogspot.com/
Michael Still on Comcast Lies at 2008-10-27 17:12:42
This is in the US. I am an Australian who happens to live in Silicon Valley.
Jeremy on Comcast Lies at 2008-10-27 17:10:44
Michael, is this in Australia or the US? Not sure, because I didnt think Comcast did business in Australia, but youre on Planet Linux Australia.
Unhappy gal on Comcast Lies at 2008-10-27 16:18:27
My experience with them is more about lying by ommission. In other words, they tell you only part of the story, but not the parts about what youll lose. We called them about a package that turned out to be the famous triple play, and we were told that we would get exactly the same cable service offerings that we had. Thankfully, I wanted to discuss it further with hubby and he called back the next day for clarification on something and they said....oh yeah...HBO and showtime are extra.
They neglect to mention fees, they neglect to mention one-time charges. My hubby was told the starter kit for a new internet connection was free.....yeah, until we got the bill with the charge for it.
Comcast has a bad customer service rep because they deserve it. They act just like their counterparts in the Ma Bell bureaucracy-land with one exception. The phone people dont care if you get their service or not so they have no problem telling you all about the fees and everything else. Comcast does care about getting your business so they tell customers what they think you want to hear. I think they must incent the call center people on sales and then teach them how to **not*** say things that a potential customer would find important to their decision.
My .02 for what its worth.

Not a graph of sorts, but I have been watching the registration page since it opened.
28-29% of earlybird tickets went in the first week of sales, but only 41% have been sold after the second week (which is not bad considering the cicumstances).

Seriously though thats some really nice research!
posty on Australian Commonwealth Government expenditure on Microsoft product licensing at 2008-10-26 21:08:08
Is it possible to do this again, MINUS the consulting costs, as you say yourself it may not be fair.
This is however a fantastic effort, and I have wondered many a time how much Microsoft is costing the Australian taxpayer.
