Stuffit expander for linux, but open source

I've been working with publishing people recently, and they're all Macintosh users. There is a trial version of Stuffit expander for linux, but they really want me to give them money after 15 days... I've googled for an open source alternative, but can't find one. Is that because one doesn't exist?

    LinuxMafia says you're SOL: http://linuxmafia.com/faq/Apps/stuffit-archives.html

Y'know, in Australia it's still (for now) legal to disassemble a product for interoperability reasons.

This leads to the next question: if you are sitting in the USA and cause a computer in Australia to decompile Alladin's program, legally speaking did the act of decompilation take place on the physical server in Australia -- where it's mostly OK -- or at your display in the USA -- where it's mostly not?

I think that's the case, more's the pity. I'd use it in a flash it it did.

Stuffit is Satan. It's the only compression/decompression technology on the Mac (that I'm aware of) which requires you to install a kernel extension (!!) in order for it to work. It contributed to making some versions of the OS much more unstable than they should have been.

Since 10.3, Apple has built zip archiving into the Finder… maybe you should subtly hint to your publishers that they might like to use that (it's in the Finder File menu, and in the contextual menu too).

Also, as of 10.4, Apple stopped bundling the Expander with the OS, hopefully a sign of the imminent death of Stuffit. We can only hope.

There's no open Stuffit expander that I'm aware of. That said, Stuffit's seems to be on the way out in the Mac OS world these days - Mac OS X 10.4 has a 'create archive' contextual menu option which creates zip archives.
