| On the potentially sorry state of second hand science fiction book stores in Sydney |
Following a recommendation from Danny, I went and checked out Galaxy Books on York Street during one of my lunch times. The review says they have a good second hand section, and I am still hunting for some old Asimovs. Unfortunately, it was a waste of time. The second hand section must of only had about 100 books in it, and none of them were interesting. They did have an awesome new section though, but I figure buying books from the 1950s new is cheating.
One book I might be forced to buy new is Asimov's The Complete Robot. I can't find it in any second hand bookstores that I've tried, and its not even available new in the US. Inexplicably though, it is easily available new in Australia. I am not sure why. It seems like a shame to spend nearly $25 on a book though, so I am not sure what I will do about that one yet.
I will continue my hunt for a good second hand book store in the Sydney CBD. Any recommendations?
Update: post title fixed after entirely deserved sarcasm from Steven.

If you want 2nd hand bookshop awesomeness in Sydney, look no further than Goulds of Newtown. Okay, not quite CBD but only a hop, step and a jump away. They seem to be open at all times of day and night and are the most disorganised, messy and amazing 2nd hand bookshop I've ever seen.
Also, if you're going to be in Canberra before you go back, I might be able to dig out some period Asimov, Heinlein, Harrison et al for you. I gots lots.

The problem with Goulds is that its impossible to find anything in the mess that is the store. Then again, its possible that its not as bad as it was a few years ago. I'm certainly willing to give them another try.

I second Gould's, though if you have cat allergies your going to find it difficult.
There's a much smaller second hand book store up Hornsby way with a half decent sci-fi section, though it might be a bit of a trek from the city (35 minutes on an express each way).
I'll have a look for any Asimov when I pop past it tonight.

Hmm, they were closed, but they're open from 1000-1700 every day.

Only worth the trip if you're happy to come back empty handed.

The review of Galaxy in my bookshop directory (by another contributor, not me) describes it as having "a disappointingly small 2nd-hand section", so you should have been warned!
A bit of science fiction finds its way into op-shop book shelves - at least in Glebe - so if you're not fussy about particular authors or titles you can often find something there. Old Asimovs aren't uncommon and typical op-shop prices for beaten up paperbacks are around $1 (maybe $2 now), which you can't complain about!

I'm in Brisbane for a few days and today cruised the CBD for bookshops. 'Archives' is a remarkable 2nd hand bookshop and a lot more organised than Goulds in Sydney, but rather expensive indeed. The half dozen books I found that looked good were all of the '$30 old paperback' variety. Too much for me.
