OK, Bill. So does that mean that if the remote database specifies that authentication/authorisation is required, then everything should work OK from the BizTalk server with the same settings?

Again, apologies for not being able to check up just now. I won't get near a Windows box until I'm back in work tomorrow. Hopefully then I'll have time to run some tests.

    Cheers

    Peter

    Peter,

MSDTC is required for SQL Adapter connections because it uses implicit
transactions (it is also required to communicate with the BizTalk Databases)

This is not actually a BizTalk issue, it is a Windows 2000 or Windows 2003
    issues.

The issue mostly relates to the tightening of RPC security, 1st in XP SP2
and then Windows 2003 SP1, and then a bit of a change in Windows 2003 SP2.

So if you talking to a remote SQL server with the BizTalk SQL adapter, you
will need to make sure that all the remote SQL servers in your network have
the same or similar MSTDC settings.

    History:

Before Windows 2003 SP1 as long as you have remote clients access enabled,
allow inbound and allow outbound in MSDTC it worked
After Windows 2003 SP1 you need to have remote clients access, allow
inbound, allow outbound and have the "No Authentication Required" Set
After Windows 2003 SP2 you need to have remote clients access, allow
inbound, allow outbound and have the "Mutual Authentication" Set (I have
some feedback from other that "No Authentication" also works)

There are several tools to test MSDTC, DTCPing
    (http://support.microsoft.com/kb/ ) and DTCTester (
    http://support.microsoft.com/kb/ ), I find DTCTest a bit better than
DTCPing, I recently had a client that insisted on placing their BizTalk
Servers outside the firewall so all the SQL & MSDTC traffic need to go
through the firewall, it took the most time to MSDTC working correctly.

Hope this helps, but there is really not any quick fixes, other than making
sure all the SQL servers in your network are running the same settings.

OK. I'm always up for a challenge.

In BTS 2006, I've noticed that when using a SQL receive adapter, some
applications require COM+ transactioning to be either turned off or set to
"Unauthorised" (or unauthenticated or something. I've forgotten which and
I'm not sat at a Windows box to check). Since this is a machine-wide
setting, it affects everything. Does anyone have a solution that can just
be applied to a single BTS application.

The error message given if the setting is not changed says that the
application was unable to participate in a DTC transaction.

    How's that?

    Peter

    Kent,

When I set the list up I was hoping people would post some BizTalk technical
questions, but so far everyone is taking the listen approach, please post
something we can start a technical discussion on.

You know people; I am disappointed in this list server. I am on other list
servers that have a great conversation about technical issues.

I see more porn request and job opportunities on this list.
