I'll second (no wait, third) that. My wife wanted a cheap laptop, so got a $1700 Inspiron (forget the model) and while it was under warranty it was great. They come to your house to replace whatever is faulty. Replaced the keyboard on it at least once.

Warranty ran out (only had 12 month) and at about 18 months it started powering off when it overheated. $200 to tell me the motherboard needed replacing (another $600 wanted) so I declined and gave it to the kids.

On that note, dont give your kids computers that play up, they never let you hear the end of it.
I told them they could go out and buy whatever computer they wanted with their pocket money but they failed to see the humour.

I have to second that. I loved my Dell Inspiron 8500 while it was alive - although it was always extraordinarily hot (apparently not extrtaordinary for a Dell I've been told).

Customer support (sales) were always very good - they even rang me a week before my warranty ran out to see if I wanted to extend it. I declined as it had been trouble free up till then. Sure enough, the hard drive died 2 days out of warranty. I replaced the drive with a new one and it too died in about 14 months. That's when I gave up on Dell.

So, as Michael said, if you go with Dell, make sure to extend your warranty ;-)

    Hey Grant,

I have a Dell Inspiron 630m which is now 2 years old and it's been falling apart for half of that time. I'm not sure what kind of experiences other people have had and I have been a bit rough with it I guess J . The best advice I can give is to make sure that you extend any warranty you get until you'd be prepared to buy another one. Maybe that's just good advice for anybody.

    Regards,

    Hi All

I am hunting for a new laptop to start the new year off, and was wondering if anyone would care to share some thoughts or recommendations with me as to a reliable developer laptop with grunt. I'm looking at the Dell (Latitude series), Lenovo, and Alienware ( http://www.alienware.com.au/dnn2/default.aspx?tabid=104&ConfigurationID=53 ). I'm particularly interested on feedback from the latter if anyone's bought one.

I also don't know whether 64 bit is the way to go or not so any opinions would be appreciated. Budget isn't a problem but I want a machine that'll look after a developer for 2 - 3 years.

    Thanks in advance

    Grant
