The XPS1730 is great if you want a gaming/entertainment machine you can pack away.

But it weighs more than 4kg. It has stuff like S/PDIF sound out (which may be great for movies or games), but probably isn’t all that important for developers.

I’d get something from the Latitude range instead. The D830 is ~2.6kg, and has the same high res (1920x1200) screen. You can also put two disks into that model if you get the D-bay 2nd hard drive module (I think that costs about $60 from Dell spare parts). Latitudes also come with 3 year NBD onsite warranty standard, and none of the trial-ware rubbish you get with the personal laptops (except maybe some trial AV software)

    Cheers

    Ken

Look at the Dell XPS M1730 and let me know how it stacks up against the others you have looked at.

My laptops don't even seem to make it to one year old before i'm pining over a new model. *sigh*
You'd think I'd get used to that by now.

    Hi All

I am hunting for a new laptop to start the new year off, and was wondering if anyone would care to share some thoughts or recommendations with me as to a reliable developer laptop with grunt. I'm looking at the Dell (Latitude series), Lenovo, and Alienware ( http://www.alienware.com.au/dnn2/default.aspx?tabid=104&ConfigurationID=53 ). I'm particularly interested on feedback from the latter if anyone's bought one.

I also don't know whether 64 bit is the way to go or not so any opinions would be appreciated. Budget isn't a problem but I want a machine that'll look after a developer for 2 - 3 years.

    Thanks in advance

    Grant
