Ok, I didn't think Microsoft were that silly so I forwarded the email
to my hotmail account to check after a tip off. It worked fine, as it
does in yahoo mail too.

Seems like gmail sees a docx file and thinks it's smart to wrap it in
another zip file. Why I don't know. No, I didn't click the 'download
all attachments' button btw. It recognises the MIME type correctly:

Declaration of support (Standards Australia) FINAL.DOCX
(application/vnd.openxmlformats-officedocument.wordprocessingml.document)

Anyway, I got the document now, crisis averted :)
