Hmm... looks like gmail's not happy with Open XML - it doesn't recognize the attached docx as a document at all, and instead gives it a MIME type of ZIP (which it is I know) but then when I download it, IE treats it as a zip, adding the extension for me. Anyway, changing the extension to docx doesn't work either - Word 2007 says the document is corrupted. Can anyone else open the document?
