[aus-dotnet] Enumerating SQL Servers in dotnet 1.1

About dotnet 1.x and enumerating SQL Servers, I was thinking about knocking up a class for this but if it's already properly handled in 2.0 then maybe it's not worth the bother.

 

Does anyone still care?

The quickest way to get a list of SQL Servers on the LAN is to get a list of host names and probe each using named pipes. This isn't perfectly reliable because it's possible to disable named pipes for a given SQL Server, but it's very fast, it discovers SQL Servers that are configured not to advertise, and it runs on Windows95 up. You can also probe on the default TCP port but this takes a long time to fail so probing is very slow.
