In the case of our group I think we also build on each other's enthusiasm. The list of projects we have that have nothing to do with our actual PhDs is HUGE! In fact that's how Doug and my entrant to Imagine Cup started last year and how I started writing my own Wiki implementation. We're also continuously pointing out cool things to each other.
I'd like to back up what Greg said earlier about unis. In particular I agree that not everybody needs to go to uni and the pressure that was put on people in high school to go on to uni was just misleading. Personally though I'm very glad I did do uni and that I went on to my PhD (even though I'm likely to be looking for a straight development job when I finish next year...). I think I've learnt a lot more than simply how to cut code in uni - in fact most of my code cutting skills have been fostered in side projects rather than in uni subjects themselves. The concepts and more importantly how to go about learning about the concepts are something that I think uni has more opportunity to delve into than institutions like TAFE. Unfortunately, having spent some time as a tutor, most students don't see that. They just want to learn how to cut code, in which case I recommend going to TAFE and getting it done twice as fast :)
And in case your wondering, the subjects I've tutored have all been very practical based - a web programming subject where they learnt about various web technologies and did a sizable multi-tiered project in ASP.NET and a windows programming subject with once again a sizable practical project (based in MFC - this was a few years back) but also looking at other windows programming environments. These were 3rd/4th year subjects though - we assumed the students had learnt how to program and we were just teaching them some specific technologies which they really should have been able to figure out on their own if they needed to.

Depends upon the uni, what you're involved with and the type of job you're looking for. For example, the research groups that Prof John Gough's been running out of QUT have produced lots of outstanding post-grad .Net related work. Guys like Joel Pobar (now in the CLR team at Redmond - and often on this list <Hi Joel>) and the Cooney brothers (Dominic and Joseph), our very own man from "Team Doug" at the Imagine Cup plus Richard Mason, etc, etc. are testimony to that. But I think John's easily one of the top compiler writers in the world and has the rare gifts of being able to both explain it and get others enthused about it. That just doesn'thappen everywhere.Regards, Greg Dr Greg Low Readify - Senior Consultant M: +61 419 201 410 -----Original Message----- From: peter@xxxxxxxxxxx [mailto:peter@xxxxxxxxxxx] On Behalf Of Prowse, David Sent: Friday, 16 September 2005 2:26 PM To: dotnet@xxxxxxxxxxx Subject: RE: [aus-dotnet] Adelaide I must have went to the wrong university, I graduated & was left feeling that all I had achieved was a foot in the door of some initial entry level roles, TAFE IT courses are far more hands on than a uni degree & I think for an industry such as IT , hands on experience is far more valuable than theoretical knowledge!, Note: being a TAFE/DET employee has not skewed my view in any form, just stating some facts! _________________You are a part of the Ausralian "dotnet" mailing list.
